Chloé Fortin, a 25-year-old ex-model has been dealing with severe stomach aches for years now. Her gynaecologist suspects that the cause of these pains is a depression, and gives her the advice to visit a psychologist. Enter Dr. Paul Meyer. After a few sessions, Chloé actually starts to feel better. Paul thinks he should stop the treatment though, because of his emerging feelings for her. These feelings are mutual. In a matter of time, Chloé moves in with Paul, but soon after, she suspects that he’s hiding something for her. It turns out that Paul has a identical twin brother, Dr. Louis Delord, who lives across the street and works as a psychologist as well. Intrigued by Pauls secretiveness involving his brother, Chloé starts to visit Louis as a patient, using a false identity.
With L’amant Double, Ozon returns to the style of his earlier works, with clear influences of David Cronenberg's Dead Ringers, Brian De Palma's Sisters and Roman Polanski's Rosemary’s Baby. The film was selected for the competition of Cannes 2017, where it got good press. Here’s what Variety had to say about it: “Sure, it’s kinky, but Ozon is having fun with it, to the extent that the entire film rewards that fetish all moviegoers have in common — voyeurism — offering up a kind of equal-opportunity objectification.”
